8 questions to ask before getting a pet
A cat or dog will live with you for many years. Before you decide, talk through these questions with your family.
The day a pet arrives, it becomes a new member of the family. It needs feeding, cleaning, playing with and taking to the vet when it's ill — every day, for years. The box above shows how long some pets live.
8 questions to talk about as a family
- Can we look after this animal for many years?
- Who will feed it, clean the litter tray or cage, and take it for walks every day?
- Is our home suitable? Is there enough space, and does our landlord allow pets?
- Is anyone at home allergic to animals?
- Can we pay for food, litter, toys, vaccines and the vet?
- Who will look after it when we go on holiday or travel?
- Will it get along with other animals at home?
- Why do we want it? Just because it's cute, or are we truly ready to care for it?
Adopt, don't shop
Thousands of cats and dogs are waiting for a home in shelters and animal charities. You can visit a municipal shelter or an adoption day — and think about an adult animal instead of a baby. Adult animals already have their personality, so it's easier to see whether they'll fit your family.
